With the grand final to be played next Wednesday, second placed Mitre 10 led by Felicity Dye and John Henderson were six premiership points ahead of third placed Legal Eagles after six rounds.
As fortune would have it the teams were drawn to play in round seven with a spot in the final up for grabs.
In the previous rounds the teams had played twice and on both occasions it was a win for Mitre 10.
Legal Eagles needed to win by five sets and collect two points for the win to jump ahead and into the final.
The two teams were primed and rearing and the courts had been prepared as best they could after having 50mm of rain since the weekend.
Legal Eagles’ men got off to a strong start winning four sets from six and were even better in the second round winning all six sets to hold a 10 sets to 2 advantage.
Mitre 10’s ladies came back just as strong in their first two rounds winning three of the four sets and leaving the match poised at Legal Eagles with 11 sets and Mitre 10 with five sets.
The grand final spot was looking dicey for Mitre 10 with 10 sets up for grabs in the mixed and spin.
Mitre 10 hit back hard enough to win six of the 10 sets to peg the margin back to 15 sets to 11 at the end of play.
The result saw both teams finish the season on 102 points, however with Mitre 10 having the superior percentage winning 107 per cent of their games to 101 per cent for Legal Eagles it was Mitre 10 who claimed second spot to compete in the grand final.
Anthony Michael and Adrian Dunmore won their three sets for Legal Eagles while Lucy Bergmeier and Anna Bowie playing for Mitre 10 were determined to be playing next Wednesday by winning their three sets.
The match featured a tale of ‘what ifs’ for farm manager Nick Bliss. The number five player for Mitre 10 in his first set of the evening partnering with Rob Sobolewski lost 6 games to nil, but at the canteen after the set Bliss set everyone straight to advise that the match had four tie-break games, all of which were lost.
The other match was between first placed Agspares and fourth placed Peppin Planners, with the former scoring a 15 set to 11 set win.
Agspares dominated in the men’s sets, winning eight to four, while the ladies shared their sets two each.
In the mixed and spin sets it was a five-all result.
Three set winners were Jon Gatacre, Nick Metcalfe and Chris Champness for Agspares while John Nolan won his three sets for Peppin.
After 7 rounds Agspares on 114 points and Mitre 10 on 102 points will play off in the grand final next Wednesday. Legal Eagles finished on 102 and Peppin Planners on 81.
