The event started on Monday, June 26, with the finals on Thursday, June 29.
Ultimate Victoria and tournament organiser Simon Talbot described the sport as a combination of multiple sporting disciplines.
“Ultimate frisbee is played with seven players on each side, including men and women playing together in the same team and using a flying disc,” he said.
“It combines elements of netball, touch football and gridiron into a fast-moving action-packed athletic sport, which has the unique feature of being totally self-refereed based on a strong culture and spirit of the game where the responsibility for fair play lies with every player.”
This is the second year of the tournament being held in Cobram after last year’s event was such a huge success.
Cobram Barooga Business and Tourism chairperson Nicky Goldsworthy said the event was another example of CBBT working hard to bring events to town that not only provided high-quality activities for local residents to enjoy, but also stimulated the local economy.
“The University Mixed Ultimate Championships will bring around 400 competitors and officials to town for a week and generate spending of over $350,000 into our local accommodation, hospitality, tourism and retail businesses,” Ms Goldsworthy said.
Council’s newly adopted Tourism Plan highlights that the local business and tourism industry rated events as being the second highest priority, behind tourism marketing, in directing where council should allocate its resources in supporting and growing local tourism.
This sentiment is supported by Ms Goldsworthy, who said events were great for Cobram.
“We know events work. They deliver on bringing people here, who stay for multiple days, and based on our experience, many of them come back at other times to visit — some even moving here to live,” she said.
Mr Talbot has encouraged anyone interested to come along and enjoy the action.
