On Berrigan Shire Council’s agenda since 2022, the project was launched to address “urgent need for maintenance of buildings in the heritage conservation zone”.
Works to convert overhead power to underground will be carried out by GPE HV Pty Ltd.
This project will replace overhead poles and wires with 350m of underground power cables between IGA and Jerilderie St.
Also installed will be five crossings connected to power boxes on the opposite side of the street, and conduits to property boundaries to reduce impacts on the footpaths.
Berrigan Shire Council says the project will improve safety, reliability, and the look and feel of the main street.
It will also help preserve the heritage character of Chanter St.
The project budget of $1.1 million includes $250,000 from Essential Energy and $590,000 from the NSW Government’s Stronger Country Communities program, with council covering the cost of civil works.
Connection cost from the power box to individual properties are at the cost of the building owner.
