Foodshare executive officer Dee Healey said the service’s food distribution was up 40 per cent on last year, this financial year to date.
“The need for our volunteers to be out and about rescuing and distributing food in our community has increased due to an alarming rise in demand for food relief,” Ms Healey said.
“We need more volunteers to fill extra shifts to keep up with and meet the needs of our community.”
Drivers do not need a heavy vehicle licence for the job, a regular Victorian car driver’s licence is all that’s required to operate the fleet vehicles, which include two vans and a small truck.
“The main requirement is that you are physically fit, can spare three to 15 hours per week (on weekdays) and are keen to be a part of a dedicated and caring team of volunteers making a real difference locally,” Ms Healey said.
“Volunteers provide the majority of hours required to operate our busy and vital community food relief service.
“Put simply, we cannot do what we do without them.”
Volunteers are also required to hold current police and working with children checks, or be prepared to have them done (at no cost to the individual).
Drivers will collect food donations and deliver food to local agencies and into areas impacted by recent fires in the region.
Shepparton Foodshare distributes the equivalent of almost one million meals annually, supporting individuals, families, school children and emergency food relief.
