Played at Wade Park in Yenda, the Wanderers were deadlocked with Yoogali with scores sitting at 1-all at half time.
The Wanderers could have easily been behind at the break, but some goalkeeping heroics from Jeremy Busby saw the visitors keep in touch.
With Yoogali lining up for a penalty, Busby managed to keep the ball out of the back of the net not once but twice, deflecting the initial shot from the penalty before blocking the secondary shot from the home side straight after.
After jumping out to a 3-1 lead in the second half the Wanderers seemed to have the game in control, but a goal to Yoogali brought some nervous moments to the visitors.
Deni settled things down and another goal saw the Wanderers cruise to a 4-2 win.
Wanderers coach Josh Perizzolo said Sunday’s victory was a confidence booster for his charges.
‘‘Just looking at their (Yoogali SC) results suggested they are the team to beat,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s nice to know that when we come up against the better sides in the comp that not only can we stick with them, but we’re also able to beat them.
‘‘Jeremy’s double save was a big moment in the game and had he let it through, it could’ve seen a different result.
‘‘To run out a full game was also pleasing. In previous weeks we ran out of legs after half time, but we kept pushing all the way through this week.
‘‘When they got within a goal of again in the second half the pressure was back on, but we pulled through with another goal.’’
Goal scorers on the day were Ben Cooper (two), Aaron Piercy (one) and Bailey Hart (one).
The game also saw a red card to Yoogali’s Abhiyash Sandhu at about the 80 minute mark.
‘‘It was towards the end of the match and it was a bit of a professional foul where the Yoogali player just stepped in front of our player,’’ Perizzolo said.
‘‘There was nothing in it and a straight red card was probably a bit harsh.
‘‘Every game we’ve played in has been played in good spirits and the other clubs have been so welcoming.
‘‘It’s also been great that the other teams are happy to travel to face us here in Deni.
‘‘We’ve even had the request of a Saturday night game under lights at Rotary Park next round.
‘‘Nothing is set in stone, but we’re all for that if it’s a possibility.’’
The GDFA will have a general bye for the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, with the Wanderers returning to action the following weekend when they host Yoogali Football Club.
