The shrill tone of the recent Edward River Council extraordinary meeting held on March 26, 2024 was quite remarkable, albeit cut short at four minutes and 16 seconds.
Watching this unfortunate display, the Australian Solicitors Conduct Rules came to mind.
In every Australian law degree, the subject of ‘ethics’ is compulsory and largely focusses upon professional conduct.
In all dealings, practitioners are required to treat others with courtesy and respect, and to not engage in conduct that undermines public confidence in the administration of justice. (See Legal Profession Uniform Law Australian Solicitors Conduct Rules 2015 (NSW) rr 4 5.)
Surely there are democratic council processes for ‘ejecting’ an individual from the chamber? A vote perhaps?
I'd be most grateful if someone could drop off a copy of any such council procedures, marked to my attention, to the PT office.
Beyond the legal profession, all individuals have the right to be treated with respect and dignity.
Councillor Clapham should never have been subjected to arbitrary whim and this disgraceful public belittling.
