This highly regarded event on the tournament circuit attracts the best open-age and junior players.
Entries are now open and will close early in the new year, with local players strongly encouraged to enter.
Tuesday Men’s Tennis
Round six of Tuesday Men’s Tennis was played last week under perfect conditions, with the courts in outstanding shape — leaving no excuses for poor tennis.
Despite this, there were still plenty of mishits and broken frames, adding to the usual on-court banter.
This marked the final round before the Christmas break. Following play, players enjoyed pizzas and refreshments while analysing the first half of the season.
In the opening match, top-placed Laver faced bottom-placed Sampras. Highlighting how close the competition is, Sampras claimed a 5–1 win, with Andrew Beggs and Leslie Ryan outstanding in winning all of their sets.
Federer and McEnroe contested several tight sets, with Federer edging the match 4–2. No player managed to win all of their sets, underlining the closeness of the encounter.
Match of the night saw Agassi take on Wilander, with both teams winning three sets each.
Agassi prevailed by four games overall, with every set closely contested and the rubber decided late on court.
Connors defeated Djokovic 4–2, with Liam Mansfield the standout player, winning all of his matches.
Becker also recorded a 4–2 win over Borg, led by skipper Sean Robinson, who won all of his matches.
In the final match of the night, Edberg defeated Lendl 5–1. Gary Page and Brendan Foran were best for Edberg, combining exceptionally well.
The ladder after Round 5 reads:
Edberg 36, Laver 33, Becker 31, Borg 30, Lendl 26, Nadal 24, Agassi 23, Connors 23, Wilander 20, Djokovic 18, Federer 17, Sampras 16, McEnroe 15.
Tuesday Men’s Tennis will resume on January 13.
Juniors to visit the Australian Open
Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club juniors have been fortunate to secure an opportunity to attend the Australian Open Hot Shots Day on Thursday January 22.
Juniors will travel by bus to Melbourne, participate in organised activities, and then enjoy seats in John Cain Arena to watch the tennis.
Traditionally, this day features Australians competing in second-round matches, creating an electric atmosphere.
Members have been contacted regarding the event, and there are still a few seats available on the bus.
This is a unique opportunity to experience a fantastic day of tennis.
Saturday Juniors
The junior program is currently on pause for the Christmas break.
It is hoped that Christmas stockings are filled with tennis racquets and balls to keep our juniors thinking about tennis during January. Members have full access to the courts and are welcome to have a hit at any time.
Junior tennis will resume on Saturday January 31.
Another season of Premier League will be held, which is always highly competitive among older match-play participants. Hot Shots and coaching groups will continue to develop skills while having fun.
Places remain available in all programs, and new players are encouraged to join.
Wilby and District Tennis
The iconic Wilby and District Tennis Association continues to provide social tennis for players of all ages and abilities across the region.
The competition has been instrumental in developing many outstanding local players.
After Round 9, the ladder stands as follows:
Telford 57, Tungamah 51, Savernake 42, Burramine 36, Wilby 17, Mulwala 13.
Once again, powerhouses Telford and Tungamah appear difficult to beat heading into finals.
The Wilby competition will break for Christmas, with play resuming on Friday January 30.
Thursday Ladies Tennis
Thursday Ladies Tennis completed a very successful Season One earlier in December. The next season will commence on Thursday February 5 and run for six weeks.
Entries are taken individually, with teams formed to ensure balanced competition across a range of abilities.
Goulburn Murray Tennis
The Goulburn Murray Tennis Association is also on a Christmas break. This competition provides a fantastic opportunity for players to compete against opponents from other clubs.
Yarrawonga’s Division 3 team has enjoyed a successful return after a six-year absence, including a tie in the most recent round. Congratulations to Danielle Lawrence, Angela Mitchell, Renne Byrne, Xavier Chessells, and Thomas Lawrence on their efforts so far.
Yarrawonga also maintains a strong relationship with Numurkah Lawn Tennis Club, which has long welcomed Yarrawonga players into its Division 1 and 2 teams.
Numurkah’s Division 2 side currently sits mid-table and will look to Tess Bassett, Ellen Bruce, Hayley Bennett, and Daryl Bennett to climb the ladder.
The Division 1 team is chasing an incredible fifth consecutive premiership. Currently placed third, the team will rely on Grant Chappell, Jack Bassett, and Lucy Bassett to be in strong form in the new year.
Easter Tennis Tournament
Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club will once again host its renowned Easter Tournament. Featuring 57 courts over four days, it is the largest and most prestigious tournament in Australia.
Entries are capped at 1,250 players, with a typical waiting list of around 500.
Member entries open on January 10, and players are encouraged to start planning entries, particularly doubles combinations.
