Anglers take advantage of the good conditions

Brodie McQuie with his monster cod.

A clear and dropping river has resulted in some amazing Murray cod catches.

We couldn’t have asked for a better month for fishing, with great weather a clear river and still plenty of fish being caught.

It’s this time of year that lure fishing comes into its own.

The numbers of fish being caught recently have been outstanding and it’s not uncommon to go fishing for a few hours and land a handful of legal sized fish.

Big fish for this month goes to Brodie McQuie, for a massive 115cm cod caught near Benarca Bend.

Brodie had gone out fishing with good mate and a better deckhand Pat Westcott for an afternoon of fishing.

The pair set off casting at some of the great timber that lines the banks out that way.

The boys had landed a few smaller cod and were waiting for the sun to set and a few other boats to move on before getting into a session using surface fishing.

When the time was right, the electric motor was deployed and before Pat could get his rod sorted Brodie had hooked into a giant from the deep with the first cast for the evening.

After a short tussle with the giant, deckhand Pat had the net ready and the fish was on deck.

A few quick picks were taken before the cod was on its way home again.

Staying with the big fish catches, Luke Todd landed an awesome cod and a new PB cod of 109cm while fishing solo.

Luke was casting his now favourite Coddog lure into to some snags when he hooked into his cod.

After a few tense moments trying to land such a fish on his own, it was landed without harm and sent back soon afterwards; great stuff Luke.

Pat Westcott has had a fantastic couple of weeks landing numinous good sized cod, but in the past two weeks he’s landed tow over the metre mark.

His first was 103cm and the second 101cm, falling victim to the Coddog Swimbait.

Justin Adair is definitely a fisherman in form, reeling in some great cod and Yellowbelly over the past month.

The biggest of the cod tipped in at 97cm and yellowbelly up to 57cm.

Michael Todd has also been amongst the fish recently, casting up some nice cod on the 110mm Coddog Loghopper.

His biggest for the season so has been 87cm.

Frank and Stacey O’Dwyer are still on a roll following on from last month.

The pair have been slaying the cod recently, casting purple lures around the timber.

Frank landed a healthy 89cm cod, along with a few others.

Scotty Kilpatrick got bit of a surprise recently when fishing for carp.

Scotty was using a small, long shank hook baited with corn and was expecting to hook into a carp or two.

He was well surprised when he reeled in a nice sized cod.

Good work Scotty; we look forward to seeing more of your catches.

James Rhook decided to take some time out and head under the National Bridge to do a spot of fishing, and was well rewarded when he reeled in a 70cm cod using cheese for bait.

Not only was it his PB, it was also a tagged cod that was released earlier on in the year.

Marc Davies has also been a top contributor on the Deni Fishing Page recently with some great catches and a new PB cod of 75cm.

He caught it using a combination of chicken and bardie grub.

Young Luke Holloway ventured below the weir and caught a few nice fish, including a solid 54cm yellowbelly.

Shan Martin went out for a midday fish on the Edward River with is partner in crime, Hayden Martin.

The pair had no luck casting lures yet again, but managed to land a 52.5cm on cheese and 55.5cm on chicken.

Nifty Neville Lester has also been stirring up a few cod.

He recently took out his old mate, Jimmy Rhook, and the pair has a great day out landing 16 cod. One of which was a cod measuring 86cm.

Neville has also been trolling up some nice cod with the Coddog Loghoppers.

Tim Rose hasn’t missed out either, landing some nice cod up to 78cm.

Dean Herberte has been busy on the water, taking out young Leo when he can.

On a recent outing, Leo caught himself a nice 69cm cod and Dean has also been catching a few cod and yellowbelly on Swagman lures.

I am pretty sure there a few quality catches I have missed, but it’s been an exceptional month and I only have limited space.

So keep fishing and hopefully I can write you up next time.

With the river dropping quickly over the past week, be careful out on the water and be aware of submerged logs and sandbars.

It’s a dangerous time on the water so take it easy and go slow.

Without doubt the lure of choice by many fishos is the 110mm Loghopper from Coddog Lures.

There’s a huge range of colours and sizes to suit any situation you may face on the river, along with a great range of Swimbaits.

You can find their page on Facebook and instagram, or better still call into Deni Outdoors and check out the range there.
