Unfortunately for the Bombers that was not the case in the round 13 reverse fixture.
At Strauch Reserve at Huntly, the host Hawks burst clear after a competitive first quarter and didn’t look back on the way to a 54-29 win.
The Bombers had hopes of another tight encounter after the first 15 minutes had Huntly in the lead, but only by a narrow 13-11 margin.
The Hawks showed more quality in the second term and stretched the lead to 10 by the main break.
Defence won out in the third quarter and, while the Bombers held the host to seven scores, Leitchville’s own offence also struggled, scoring four as Huntly started to pull out of reach, up 13 with a quarter to play.
The Hawks put their foot down in the final term, winning it confidently 19-7 to seal the four points.
With five matches left on their schedule, the loss likely sounds the death knell for the Bombers’ (2-1-8) finals hopes, still two-and-a-half wins back from fifth and with some top opposition on the upcoming schedule.
Saturday brings a winnable game in Leitchville, against Lockington-Bamawm United (3-9), the Cats also jockeying for position among the lower-placed sides.
