About 30 Deniliquin club members participated in the Southern Inland Swimming Association qualifying event, many of them competing for the very first time after a surge in club membership during 2025.
Deniliquin Swim Club president Ben Littmann said there were four hours of swimming over a fantastic day.
He said while the open air conditions were a little cold for the swimmers after an extended heatwave - with temperatures dropping from 44℃ on Friday to just 28℃ on Saturday - it was a more pleasant experience for spectators and officials.
“We were told it was warm in the water, though,” he said.
“We were very happy with the day overall, and we’d like to thank our sponsors, raffle sponsors, helpers and families.
“The day was very well run, and special mention to Liz and Chris Butcher for the role they played in that.”
In addition to the local club, communities/clubs represented at the carnival were Griffith, Coleambally, Kerang, Corowa, Ballarat, Echuca, Finley, Hay, Leeton/Yanco, Narrandera, North Albury, Temora, The Rock, Wagga Wagga, Young and Jerilderie.
As the first meet since the death of Deniliquin Swim Club life member Chris Hayes, the club and visiting swimmers and families paid tribute to the stalwart on Saturday.
In addition to a minute silence to honour his contributions to the club over many years, a Chris Hayes Memorial Swim was organised.
More details on this swim, and local results from the carnival, will be included in Friday’s edition.
