The youngest of the Deni Junior Giants “stole” the spotlight at the the Benalla basketball tournament on February 21-22.

It marked the final games of the tournament season for the under-16 and under-18 teams, and a grand final win for the under-12s Boys Black team.
The U12 Girls and U16 Girls both finished as runners-up in thier sections.
The U12 Boys Black team had an outstanding run, remaining undefeated across their five tournament games.
Their victories included a 43-11 win over Seymour, a 43-20 win over Mansfield, a 52-17 win over Myrtleford, a 50-18 win over Shepparton Gators Nioa, and a 47-13 win over Yarra-Mul Lakers.
Despite strong wins in the rounds, the grand final against Shepparton tested the boys’ resolve.
Coach Brett MacDonald emphasised teamwork and sharp passing as Deni held a hard‑earned 19-11 lead at half time.
The Giants maintained their intensity in the second half and secured a well‑deserved grand final victory, 36-25.
Levi Robson was named MVP for his impressive performance.
Jetta MacDonald was awarded the tournament award for his all‑round impact.
He led by example, consistently contributing both offensively and defensively, and was a key player throughout the tournament.
Although the U12 Girls team did not go through the tournament unbeaten, they secured a grand final spot after a strong showing.
After a narrow loss to the Shepparton Gators in their first game (8-6), the girls bounced back with wins over the Yarra‑Mul Lakers (24-11) and Mansfield (9-7) before a final‑round loss to the Seymour Blasters (20-14).
In the grand final rematch against Seymour, the intensity was palpable.
The girls’ one‑on‑one defence was solid, but Seymour’s zone defence posed challenges.
The game remained tight throughout, but ultimately Seymour took the win 23-13.
Evie Hunter earned the tournament award for her impressive growth, showing confidence and stepping up when her team needed her most.
The U16 Girls also had a strong tournament, with dominant wins over Benalla (33-23), Wangaratta (51-12), and Yarra‑Mul (26-17).
Their only loss came in a hard‑fought round game against the Shepparton Gators (24-21), but their 3-1 record secured them a spot in the grand final against Shepparton.
The girls came out with determination, quickly establishing a nine point lead.
However, Shepparton mounted a comeback, and with just one minute remaining snatched the win 19-16.
Isabelle Didcock was recognised with the tournament award for her defensive efforts and overall improvement.
U12 Boys Orange started the tournament well, leading the first game until the final minute but going down 24-28 against Shepparton Harrap.
The boys continued to work hard but were unable to secure a win in a five round tournament playing Corryong (7-26), Yarra- Mul Lakers (13-33), Mansfield (2-50) and Shepparton Micrimmon (10-55).
Braith Leiper was awarded the tournament award for following the coach’s instruction and for his enthusiasm.
The U14 Boys Black team had an undefeated run through the rounds, but due to percentage, they narrowly missed out on a grand final appearance.
Their victories included wins over the Shepparton Gators (30-26), Myrtleford (38-24), Mansfield (36-12), and Wangaratta (41-11).
The boys are determined to push harder in the next tournament.
Lachie Jeffrey was awarded the tournament award for his continued growth and impact on the court.
The U14 Boys Orange team had their best tournament of the season, with a 23-11 win over the Gators, a tough loss to eventual grand final winners Cobram Cobras (52-12), a thrilling 18-17 win over Corryong Phoenix, and a strong 39-26 victory over Benalla.
Coach Dimity Strongman praised the team’s commitment and growth, and Chase Dunn received the tournament award for his grit and determination.
The U14 Girls Black team faced a challenging tournament, competing in Division 1.
While they didn’t secure a win, their determination and resilience were exceptional.
Playing against some of the best teams, the girls are sure to benefit from the experience.
Aysha Bartlett received the tournament award for her leadership and determination on the court.
The U14 Girls Orange team also had a strong tournament, starting with a win over Tumut before narrowly losing to Shepparton, Seymour, and Benalla.
Maddie Hunter was awarded the Tournament Award for her efforts.
The U16 Boys started strong with solid wins over Cobram (40-21) and Shepparton (38-20) but suffered narrow losses to Shepparton (34-27) and Seymour (35-26).
Mickey Benger was presented with the tournament award for his efforts.
The U18 teams faced tough competition in their final tournament of the season.
The U18 Girls played hard despite losing all their matches, including a 51-23 loss to Tatura and narrow defeats to Corryong (27-24), Wallan (32-28), and Rochester (21-14).
Despite not securing a win, their effort and heart were commendable.
Ruby Cowley received the tournament award in her final season with the Giants.
The U18 Boys, led by Coach Mick Everett, started with losses to Benalla (47-20) and Tumut (43-23) before securing a 43-13 win over Shepparton Bajada in their final game.
Seth May was presented with the tournament award for his strong performance.
As the tournament came to a close, the Giants bid farewell to several top‑age players who are leaving the team after many years of dedication and hard work.
Henry Robinson, Spencer Cowley, Chase Bartlett, Bae Willis, Ruby Cowley, Sienna Elphick, Addison Hussey, and Ava Marshall have all been integral parts of the Giants’ journey.
While it’s the end of an era for these talented players, their contributions and achievements will be remembered for years to come.
The young Giants will continue to work hard in training as they prepare for the last tournament of the season in Wodonga on March 14 and 15.
