The ceremony, held at the Cobram Hotel, acknowledged a number of contributors to the game, with Wayne’s name standing out as one synonymous with cricket in Deniliquin and Southern Riverina.
“You don’t go out and look for these kinds of things, but it’s nice to be acknowledged,” Wayne told the Pastoral Times following the ceremony.
“It’s about enjoying the great game of cricket, and if you can keep giving back, it’s wonderful.”
Wayne also paid tribute to his wife, Cheryl Bradley, who he described as “an absolute rock” and someone who has contributed immensely to the sport and community.
The pair were jointly awarded the Debbie Nicholls Volunteer of the Year Award earlier this year by the Southern Riverina Cricket Council, a fitting recognition of their decades of service.
Wayne was the first recipient of life membership to the SRCC in 1993, with Cheryl receiving the same honour earlier this year.
Their involvement has been particularly strong in recent seasons, with Deniliquin hosting multiple days of representative junior cricket and the Rhinos stepping up their hosting duties thanks to improved facilities.
Well known as educators across Deniliquin and district, Wayne and Cheryl have long been active in a range of local sporting organisations.
Their impact continues to be felt, with Wayne still volunteering with primary school cricket - including a carnival which was taking place as he spoke to the Pastoral Times yesterday.
This dedication was also highlighted in messages of congratulations shared by the Deni Rhinos and Southern Riverina Cricket Council, and in a special message organised for Wayne from Australian cricket legend Adam Gilchrist.
“For more than 50 years, Wayne has devoted himself to the game he loves,” The Rhinos shared.
“Whether he is cooking a barbecue at a junior cricket event, organising carnivals behind the scenes, or offering support wherever it is needed, Wayne’s presence has become an essential part of what summer cricket means in our community.
“His service is a powerful reminder that the heart of our sport is not only found in runs and wickets, but also in the dedication of the administrators, volunteers, and leaders who help clubs and associations thrive.
“On behalf of everyone who has been fortunate enough to share a connection with Wayne through cricket, we offer our deepest thanks.
“Your commitment, passion, and selfless contribution have enriched our game and inspired generations.:
In their tribute, the SRCC said they hoped to keep Wayne around “for many years to come”.
“While Wayne will happily admit he wasn’t always the star on the field, his decades of dedication to cricket administration have been nothing short of exceptional,” the SRCC said.
“He led Southern Riverina for more than 40 years and continues to be an enormous support to our current team.
“Wayne’s knowledge, passion, and willingness to roll up his sleeves and help in any way he can make him an invaluable part of our cricket community.
“We’re extremely fortunate to have him.”
Wayne’s Hall of Fame induction adds to an already impressive list of accolades, including life membership to the Deniliquin and District Cricket Association, Deniliquin Junior Cricket Association, West Deniliquin Cricket Club, Riverina Cricket Zone, Deniliquin PSSA, Edward River Junior AFL, and the Deniliquin Junior Soccer Club.
He was also awarded an Order of Australia in 2007 for his service to sport and education.
