It’s fewer games than normal, with a second venue in one round to be used for the first time in the Proten Cup’s eight‑season history.
Ivanhoe requested to move its matches against Goolgowi due to the funeral of respected Ivanhoe local Ashley Clark.
Their women’s and men’s teams will now play on Friday night at Goolgowi Sports Ground, with Goolgowi contributing their gate fees to the Blue Heelers.
With the Deni Blue Heelers women denied their maiden competition appearance in round one before the long weekend bye, Saturday’s home debut is more significant.
After a strong showing at the knockout, they will be eager to make a statement in front of a home crowd.
Rankins Springs have shown promising signs in both the knockout and their shortened round one match, but face another long road trip into Deniliquin.
Heelers president Rachael Parry said preparations for the home fixture are running smoothly, with all Deni girls available and eager to take the field.
The line-up will include nine local girls and six from Goolgowi.
The female Heelers sit first on the ladder after the forfeit, and Parry is hopeful the side can secure a win at home.
In the men’s, Deni and Rankins Spring are both chasing their first win.
The Heelers will have five players returning from injury and work commitments, which coach Drew Hinkley said will hopefully secure a home win.
“The forwards are looking big, and the backs are looking quick,” he said.
“Rankins Springs look like a solid team. I’m hoping we should have them for pace, whereas they probably have us for size.”
Saturday’s women’s matches kick off at 12.20 pm with Barellan v Hillston, followed by Deniliquin v Rankins Springs at 1 pm.
Men’s games follow at 1.50 pm and 3.00 pm, with the same match‑ups.
While there is no canteen due to scheduling conflicts, a tent will operate selling merchandise, soft drinks and alcohol from midday.
There will also be a coffee van, and a barbecue run by the Deniliquin Drovers Rugby Union Club.
A raffle will also be held featuring signed Melbourne Storm hats and scarves, as well as various other prizes donated by local businesses.
Celebrations after the game will be held at the Deniliquin RSL Club, win, lose, or draw.
