The Deniliquin Blue Heelers Rugby League Club faced a challenging day on Saturday, with both the men’s and women’s sides going down to strong Barellan outfits.

But there were clear signs of growth across both teams.
In the women’s match, both sides were short on numbers and relied on fill‑ins from other clubs to take the field.
Despite the disruption, coach Rachael Parry said the performance was “really awesome”, noting it was the side’s first time playing Barellan after their round one fixture was forfeited.
Deniliquin held their own and was rewarded with a try to Lexi Lightfoot.
Barellan’s experience told in the end, finishing 30‑4 winners, but Parry said the group took plenty from the contest.
Looking ahead to Hillston this weekend, she expects “the usual team” to be available and acknowledged the challenge ahead, describing Hillston as “quite a strong side”.
The men’s clash saw Deniliquin produce their best game of the season.
Fullback Jonathon Oliver opened the scoring with his first try for the club, a moment coach Drew Hinkley was proud to highlight.
“He’s been my captain this season, and has really stepped up.
“He is quite an asset to the club,” Hinkley said.
Deni matched Barellan’s intensity early and trailed by only a few points at the break, recording their lowest points conceded this season.
Barellan’s class showed after halftime, with doubles to Rodney Gibbs and Teei Piawi stretching the margin to 36‑4, but Hinkley said the side is still showing “positive signs” each week.
The game was an important milestone for the Heelers, as they came up against their round one match up.
When the teams last met, Barellan won 66-4. It shows there has been improvement in the Heelers’ defence.
With Hillston up next, Hinkley expects to be “a bit short” with players having work commitments.
“The boys will do what they do, try their hardest and give it their all.
“The club can’t thank Proten enough, they’ve created a really good competitive culture.”
