The Southern Inland Rugby Union’s 2nd grade, where the Drovers have previously competed in, had their first round of the 2025 season on Saturday.
Two Drovers clubmen, however, have still entered the competition with another side, in two separate grades.
Erasmus Bothma and Rob Scott play with the Albury Steamers, who struggled to force a result in either grade at the weekend.
“We lost the first game which was very scrappy from both sides. We just chase them down after they scored first,” Scott said.
The Drovers continue to work on building rugby union in the region, with touch footy and by supporting junior members playing with other competition teams.
Four junior players are suiting up for either Hay or Leeton.
Harlem Brown and Sam Strong both played strong games for the Hay Cutters, who played and won against both Cootamundra and Harden at the weekend.
Drovers stalwart Tim Strong is supporting them in their journey.
“Sam and Harlem both played good games for the Hay side,” Tim said.
“Harlem’s line running was excellent and Sam was active in attack and defence.”
Lara Strong also played well representing Leeton at the weekend, and her brother Xander also played at the gala day.
The Drovers will continue to run its local touch rugby nights, with the aim of generating enough interest for forma SIRU team in future years.
The Deniliquin Drovers Rugby Union Club celebrates its 40th anniversary this year.
Celebrations are being planned for Saturday, June 7.
