After winning the toss, the Rhinos elected to bat first on a wicket that promised plenty of runs and set about building a solid total.
However, there was immediate drama when opener Boddie Arthur was dismissed for a golden duck, caught from the very first ball of the match.
Youngsters Lachlan Holloway and Hamish Baker responded well to steady the innings, combining to rebuild before Holloway fell in the 12th over for a well-made 34.
Baker continued to accumulate alongside Rhinos debutant Melisha Deshapriya, with the pair punishing any loose bowling as the home side gained control. The Rhinos reached 2-77 at the first drinks break after 15 overs.
Baker's valuable innings came to an end in the 19th over when he was stumped off a leg-spin delivery for 36, leaving the Rhinos at 3-97 after 20 overs.
Deshapriya continued to impress on debut, compiling a fluent 48 at close to a run a ball before being caught in the 27th over.
At 4-136, experienced pair Andrew Hogan and Griegan French combined to ensure the Rhinos capitalised on the strong platform.
The reliable duo controlled the closing stages of the innings, both reaching unbeaten half centuries while adding crucial runs through the final overs. French finished on 69 not out and Hogan on 51 not out as the Rhinos posted an imposing 4-248 from their 45 overs.
Defending 249, the Rhinos made the perfect start with fast bowler Joice Matthew striking in the second over. Riley Thompson was caught by Holloway for two, handing the home side an early breakthrough.
Katamatite's response was then led by Giordan Lukies and Oliver Maynard, who shared a lengthy partnership that stretched until the 31st over.
While they occupied the crease effectively, the Rhinos bowlers and fielders prevented the pair from scoring quickly enough to seriously threaten the target.
By the time the breakthrough arrived, Katamatite still required 143 runs from fewer than 15 overs despite having wickets in hand.
Deshapriya produced a key moment in the field with a run out to remove Lukies for 35, while Ben Lukies was run out two overs later for six after Anthony Bradley completed a direct-hit at the bowler's end as the batter attempted a second run.
The wickets continued to fall as Rory Bartlett claimed two quick scalps, first with a caught and bowled before clean bowling another batter, leaving Katamatite struggling at 5-134 at the start of the 37th over.
With the result effectively secured, the Rhinos maintained their intensity through the closing overs. Holloway claimed the final wicket of the innings when Maynard was dismissed for 84, caught by Brad Todd in the penultimate over.
Katamatite finished on 6-160 from its 45 overs, with the Rhinos completing a comprehensive 88-run victory to begin their A-grade season on the ideal note.
