The team made the trip to Mallala at the weekend to compete in the Peter Hall Memorial Six Hour Race.
An event the local club became involved in through Peter Short, who recently passed away, they registered this year under the team name ‘Shorty’s Boys’.
Member Terry Maher said the team has often come away from South Australia with a third or fourth placing, but it seemed only fitting that this year was the year they won the race outright.
Maher was one of the drivers in his Excel, alongside Neil Goudie in a Pulsar, Bryson Lloyd in a Getz and Ray Manson in a Gemini.
The team also consisted of team manager Graham Christie, time keepers Gavan and Freida Nolan and universal technical advisor Ken Maher.
“With appreciation and respect to our departed member and fellow driver Peter Short, we entered as Shorty’s Boys,” Maher said.
“Peter was the first of us to ever compete at South Australia, with a Melbourne-based team in 2012.
“He then got the Deni team together, and we’ve attended every year from 2013 onwards.”
Mallala is located 40km north west of Adelaide, and the event is a medium speed (130km/h), heavy braking cornering track. Each lap is 3km.
Practice and qualification took place over four races on Saturday, with all four Deni cars coming through and the drivers optimistic of a chance come Sunday’s race.
After a warm up, the Deni team then spent the next six hours on the track and thankfully everything went to plan.
Maher said other teams did run in to trouble though, with one car catching fire, one rolling and a number suffering mechanical issues.
After what seemed like a long wait while the results were scrutinised, the Deni team was declared the winner.
