On Saturday, the Diggers travelled to Echuca to play Echuca in the first semi final.
Echuca had the home ground advantage, but Deni RSL gave it their all against the extra strong Echuca teams who showed a fierce determination.
Niels Hilton’s team of Jake Glenn, John Wilson and Tony King had a struggle all day and were the first rink to finish, going down 11-19.
Rod Reid’s team of Jo Chick, Archie Webster and Ron Marchetti had the middle rink and the only win for the day, finishing on 26-17.
Craig Taylor’s team bowled a marathon. With Chris Frampton, Mally Austin and Pete Thommers, their game went an extra half hour, with RSL going down 15-26.
The Diggers had great success during the season having made it to the finals, but Saturday was not their day, with the overall score being 52-62.
The RSL team congratulated Echuca and wished them good luck for their continued finals campaign.
On Tuesday, the Diggers travelled to Mathoura to play the first semi final for midweek pennant, after again having a fantastic season to finish in the top four. They faced a very loud Echuca side.
Again, only RSL only won one rink for the day, with the Diggers not handling the Mathoura greens.
Niels Hilton’s team of Ian McKenzie, Miro Peterman and Mally Austin drew the dreaded ditch rink. This brought many challenges to the RSL side, and their final score was 13-28.
The middle rink of Graham Gordon, Jo Chick and Archie Webster, skipped by Craig Taylor had similar difficulties and went down as well, 12-27.
Neighbouring rink, Rod Reid’s team of Allan Hodges, Chris Frampton and Ron Marchetti had a hard fought win, 29-18.
The 11 shot victory was not enough to cover the two losses with overall scores being 73-54.
The RSL Diggers midweek team had finished third on the ladder, but unfortunately the season has come to an end. The Diggers’ members were thrilled with their success through the season and extremely pleased to have finished one rung higher on the ladder than last season.
