From Wednesday to Friday last week, six junior players from Deniliquin participated, representing both the Polding (Catholic schools) and Riverina (public schools) teams as part of the School Sport Games.
These were Charlie Murray, Edward Bliss, Henry Pisasale and Jett Boyer from St Michael’s, and Jed Fitzmaurice and Nate Fitzpatrick from Deniliquin South Public.
Their respective teams competed against the best Australian football primary school students in the state.
Jed and Nate were a part of the successful Riverina team that came away undefeated in the tournament, ultimately being crowned state champions.
The Riverina team had a come from behind win against CIS in the semi-final and a strong win over MacKillop in the final.
All the students competed admirably, with Henry awarded ‘Best Player’ for Polding.
He was subsequently selected to be part of the NSW state team, along with eight players from the Riverina team.
The national PSSA Australian Football championships are set to be held in Maroochydore in Queensland from August 3 to August 10, with the players to compete against the best under-12s players from across Australia.
