The Murray River councillor said the number of kangaroos on our roads had become ‘‘remarkably worse’’ over the last six months.
Mr Weyrich said the issue needs to be raised again after he hit two kangaroos while driving from Griffith to his home in Mathoura last week.
‘‘I was astounded by the number of roos, particularly between Jerilderie and Mathoura,’’ he said.
‘‘It’s gone from bad to worse with lots of 30 or 40 at a time.
‘‘We’re approaching a point where people are a prisoner in their own town at night because it’s far too dangerous to drive.’’
Despite multiple attempts by Mr Weyrich, formal motions to investigate the need for a kangaroo cull, specifically between Deniliquin and Moama, have been rejected by the NSW Government.
‘‘Why the government is so reluctant for a professional cull is beyond me,’’ he said.
‘‘I’m not trying to get a point for my campaign with this issue; you can ask anyone who drives on our roads just how dangerous it is.
‘‘I challenge anyone to tell me it’s a bad idea to have a professional cull.
‘‘Lives are at risk. There are plenty of people who hit kangaroos who are left seriously injured or in some instances don’t survive.
‘‘Rejecting the proposal for a professional cull and saying ‘long-term results are better delivered through proactive campaigns to raise driver awareness, caution signage and strategic fencing’ is just not good enough,’’ he said.
