Shepparton speakers are set to explore mental health for Harmony Day.

Every year on March 21, Australia marks Harmony Day, an observance highlighting cultural diversity and inclusivity.

Established in 1999, it was introduced to promote respect, inclusiveness and a sense of belonging for all Australians, regardless of background.

The date coincides with the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, which commemorates the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre in South Africa, where police killed peaceful protesters opposing apartheid laws.

With 27.7 per cent of Australia’s population born overseas as of 2021, Harmony Day was introduced to encourage conversations about multiculturalism. It has since become a widely recognised occasion, marked by community events, school activities and workplace initiatives.

In Shepparton, Voices for Harmony hosts an annual event featuring notable speakers. This year’s theme is mental health, with keynote speaker Australians for Mental Health executive director Chris Gambian. Other speakers include state Member for Shepparton Kim O’Keeffe, with a Q&A session led by ‘Accelerated Community Change Leader’ Lisa McKenzie.

The event will take place at Quality Hotel Parklake on March 21, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.
