A public meeting held at the Town Hall last night resulted in the formation of the Deniliquin Boat Club.
Mr Tom Hetherington, the prime mover behind the project, was elected president, with Mr R. E. Whittney and Mr S. W. Heilbronn as vice‑presidents.
Mr Hetherington outlined his ideas for the proposed club, and Mr Whittney said a long‑felt need would be filled by its formation.
On the motion of Mr L. Lloyd, it was decided the club be called the Deniliquin Boat Club.
Other officials elected were: Patron – Mr Chas. Tasker; Hon. Secretary – Mr Chas. Schmidt; Hon. Treasurer – Mr Harry Pill. The election of a committee was postponed for three months.
On the motion of Messrs Pill and J. Collins, the membership fee was fixed at £1/1. It was decided to write to established boat clubs for information regarding rules and constitution.
The need for a mooring jetty was discussed at length. Mr Whittney stressed the importance of a mooring place for both racing and pleasure boats. Mr Lloyd suggested Aljoes Creek behind the post office as a central location. Mr Tasker supported the idea and said a wall on the principal swimming club retaining bank could be constructed.
The jetty was proposed to be between 200 and 300 feet to accommodate all boats. Messrs P. dePagny and H. Pill moved that the council’s engineer be approached for inspection and suggestions. Shallow portions of the creek may be scooped by a working bee.
A meeting with the council engineer was requested for the following day. A working bee was arranged for Sunday, with volunteers asked to meet at the water tower at 1.30 o’clock. Tractors will be used for snagging operations.
