That is the message Deniliquin Police want to get out into the community after several reports of fireworks being let off in Deniliquin over several months.
Detective Chief Insp Jy Brown said as well as being illegal, using fireworks without the proper training and authority can be dangerous.
“Other than when we have controlled events like the Ute Muster, Deniliquin Show, Edward River Christmas Party or private functions which hire experienced pyrotechnics, there should be no fireworks let off in our community,” he said.
“Fireworks are classed as an explosive, and they carry an inherent danger of injury, or even death, if not handles or stored correctly.
“That risk increases if you’re under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
“If we do detect any person in possession of or using fireworks without the appropriate licensing, we will take action.”
Det Insp Brown said the penalty for unlicensed possession or use of fireworks can be up to $3500. Those charged may also face court, and a possibly custodial sentence of 12 months.
A further fine of $3500 and potential 12 month prison term also applies if you are charged with negligent handling of fireworks, or letting off fireworks near other people and in residential areas.
