Murray River councillors have voted unanimously to release $60,000 held in reserve for the refurbishment of the vacant unit two at Mathoura Retirement Village.

The funding was generated from the village’s operations and held by council on behalf of Mathoura’s Section 355 committee.
It will be used for the renewal of the unit’s bathroom, laundry, toilet, flooring, paint work, window and electrical fittings, and accessibility upgrades.

The motion was moved by Deputy Mayor Neil Gorey, and seconded by Cr Joy Allan.
Cr Allan said approving the release was an obvious choice.
“This is a great little community,” Cr Allan said.
“The money’s already in reserve, and (we) can go ahead with that renovation.”
The works, approved at the request of the village’s committee, will allow for further renewal projects on three of Mathoura’s occupied older units.
In his letter to council chief executive Stacy Williams requesting the redevelopment, MRV committee president Ian Williams proposed that any remaining funds be allocated to refurbishments of unit one.

Mr Williams proposed that the resident from unit one be moved into the refurbished unit two, allowing works on their unit to begin quickly.
While Mayor John Harvie and Cr Bianca Hurn expressed scepticism that there would be any money remaining after the renewal of unit two, council voted unanimously in favour of the motion.
