May I first say that I have tremendous respect for Louise Burge and the work she has done on behalf of our community in advocating for changes to the Basin Plan.
Likewise, I want changes to the Basin Plan before it totally ruins rural communities and Australia’s food security.
But I cannot see this happening if we have a One Nation representative for Farrer in the Federal Parliament, as supported by Louise in her letter.
We must accept the reality that right now we have a Labor Government, and the last person they will listen to is someone from One Nation.
If elected, David Farley’s voice and opinion will get absolutely nowhere.
While that may be unfortunate, it is inevitable in the harsh world of politics.
At state level, we elected an Independent member, Helen Dalton, and it could well be argued that we have a louder voice on state issues than has been the case for many years.
We also need an Independent at Federal level who can work with Helen Dalton and convince our leaders of the unnecessary damage from the Basin Plan and the need to acknowledge the social and economic harm to our rural communities, for little or no environmental benefit.
If Michelle Milthorpe is our next Member for Farrer, she will be in a position to work with the government and other Independents.
She has a much greater chance of getting attention and traction than a One Nation representative.
I encourage everyone to think very carefully about your vote in this by-election.
We do not want the next two years to be wasted with a Member for Farrer who has no chance of being listened to in Canberra.
Yours etc.
