Opting to dress as a police officer for the Deniliquin North School Book Week parade, seven year-old Junior Haworth was frustrated when he could not find the book he needed to complement his costume.
So he and his mum Tracey Pasco made a quick trip to Deniliquin Police Station for some assistance.
There, the officers went one better to give Junior an experience he’ll never forget.
“A young constable came out and asked what we needed help with, and when we explained he went off in search of a booklet or something Junior could take to school.
“He came back soon after and, while one of his colleagues was searching, he asked if Junior would like a tour of the station.
“They showed him the operation room, the cells and a few other things - he was just speechless.
“He didn’t say anything at all during the tour, but as soon as we got outside again he just burst out with ‘that was amazing!’.
“It was a really nice moment, and from the look of the officers’ faces, they enjoyed it as much as Junior did.”
Tracey said Junior has raved about the experience to whoever will listen since.
She said she’s not sure where Junior’s fascination with the police comes from, but said she’s always encouraged her children to be friendly with and respectful of police.
“We’ve always praised police to the kids, and explained to them that they are here to help us.
“If we’re ever stopped for an RBT, or something, we always put the windows down, so the kids can say ‘hello’. And the police are always really nice.
“I think maybe his love of police has grown from that mutual respect.”
