A quintet of students and teachers combined to grow and style their own mullets for the Black Dog Institute's initiative.
The campaign is based on statistics that one in five Australians will experience mental illness in their lifetime, and that more than 75 per cent of mental health problems occur before the age of 25.
The school wanted to take part to raise funds to help improve mental health support services across the nation, and to start important conversations.
Teacher Sam Frazier said the initiative was received well by the school community.
“Year 12 student Luke Moorse and I had our heads shaved at assembly, and we then had a quick presentation and marvelled at AI's ability to put mullets on teachers.
“Students Spencer Hayes and Tom Dudley, and teacher Blake Toomey, then had their heads shaved in the amphitheatre.”
With a shaved top and sides and party at the back, Mr Frazier said he could feel the difference heading into winter. But he was keen to support the cause.
“I'm feeling the cold a lot more!
“I'm sure we'll all grow it out to a respectable length and go again next year.
“It was a last minute sort of thing. I'd only found out about it at the start of April when it usually starts, and then we were on holidays for the middle of April so we scrambled to organise something.
“Our goal was $1000, and we didn't quite make it, getting it to $700.
“The school community got amongst it on the day and turned out to watch the haircuts.
“It's good because you can have some banter with the kids about the haircuts and why we did them.”
