For more than half a century, Ski School at the Deniliquin Boat Club has been a cornerstone of the club’s culture, teaching juniors and seniors not just how to ski, but how to be safe, confident and capable on the water.

What began in the 1960s with senior members showing newcomers the ropes has grown into a structured program that has guided thousands of young skiers through their first turns.
Ski School took on its current format in the mid‑1970s and still runs today, powered entirely by volunteers.
Long time volunteer Marg Tait, who has been involved for 20 years, said the program has helped shape the club’s identity.
“I think the Ski School has grown the club,” she said.
“A lot of people don’t have boats, and this gives them an opportunity to go out and learn to ski.”
Marg said the program has always been about progression, from four‑year‑olds having their first go, to older juniors mastering singles, doubles and more advanced skills.
“My kids learnt to ski, and now their kids are learning,” she said.
“It’s something I enjoy doing, and I love watching the kids progress.”
In its early days, Ski School ran on Sundays at the original McLean Beach site, supported by raffles, food and a strong social atmosphere.
Over the decades it has evolved into a well‑organised system, with advanced skiers often returning as mentors.
“As the kids get better, they stay involved,” Marg said.
“They help the next generation get ready for their turn, support them in the water, observe, or even drive the boats.
“Everyone supports one another.”
The Ski School is not only all about junior members learning to ski but adult members have also been welcomed to learn to ski, in a welcoming and friendly environment.
Members and guests of the club enjoy many social activities throughout the year as well as special events marking milestones throughout the clubs journey.
These have included Wakeboard Days, Barefooting Sessions, Water Woodstock, theme days, NYE parties over the years.
With each decade that passes there are more laughs, more accomplishments and fun times all round, hopefully continuing on for many more to come.
