The annual scheme provides eligible rural ratepayers with access to 55 species of indigenous and native seedlings at a subsidised price of just $1.65 per plant, helping landholders establish native vegetation while supporting healthier, more resilient landscapes.
Planting indigenous trees and shrubs delivers a range of benefits for both the environment and agricultural land.
Native vegetation can help reduce soil erosion, improve soil health, provide shelter for livestock, enhance biodiversity, create habitat for local wildlife and increase resilience to drought and extreme weather conditions.
Thanks to council's ongoing support of the program, revegetation projects are more accessible and affordable for local landholders, helping to create lasting environmental and economic benefits across the region.
In addition to subsidised seedlings, tree guards are also available to order, with a contribution from the Ricegrowers' Association of Australia helping to offset costs for participants.
Edward River Council CEO Jack Bond said the scheme provides a simple and affordable way for landholders to improve both their properties and the local environment.
"From improving soil health and providing shelter for livestock to creating habitat for native wildlife, the benefits of planting indigenous species are far-reaching. At just $1.65 per seedling, this scheme makes it easier for landholders to invest in the long-term health and resilience of their land,“ he said.
The Rural Tree Planting Scheme remains a popular initiative for landholders looking to establish shelter belts, revegetate degraded areas, improve creek and paddock health, encourage native wildlife and enhance the natural character of their properties.
Orders are now open, and will close at 5pm on Friday, September 18.
Seedlings will be propagated and grown over the coming months, ready for collection and re-planting in May 2027.
