Long‑time Deniliquin holidaymaker Heath Mitchell spent a slow but interesting afternoon around Lawson Syphon recently, picking up a few yellowbelly on scrub worms bought from Deniliquin Outdoors and Camping.

The bite was far from typical.
“Very slow, more like how a carp would bite,” Heath said.
“They definitely didn’t hit like yellowbelly normally hit.”
The action came in a short late‑afternoon window, lasting about an hour before the river shut down completely.
And to top off the afternoon session, Heath was pleased with one thing.
“I didn’t see a carp,” he reported.
Heath has been holidaying in Deniliquin for more than 20 years, at McLean Beach Holiday Park.
While cod season has ended, he reminds fellow anglers that there’s still plenty of fishing to be done.
Yellowbelly usually offer good opportunities as the weather warms.
Under NSW recreational fishing rules, yellowbelly (golden perch) have a minimum legal length of 30cm, a daily bag limit of five, and a possession limit of 10.
Staying within the rules ensures the fishing remains healthy for locals, visitors and long‑time holidaymakers like Heath.
