Three years on, Shepparton is still waiting for more train services

Three years on from the promised timeline for additional train services to Melbourne, Shepparton is still waiting for the Victorian Government to fulfil its promise.

A spokesperson for state Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes has said the promised train services are a matter of ‘when’, not ‘if’.

Ten extra services per week were delivered as part of phase one.

Phase three of the line upgrade pledge was supposed to see nine return services from Shepparton to Melbourne on weekdays, almost doubling the number of services from before the upgrades began.

Shepparton currently receives six return services on weekdays.

A statement from Ms Symes’ office claims the extra services will be “rolled out in the coming months”.

When asked for clarification on the timeline, Ms Symes’ office said that she had asked the same question and would inform The News when she had an answer.

State Member for Shepparton Kim O’Keeffe highlighted the ongoing issue of overcrowding on the trains, impacting safety for the growing region.

“The project wasn’t completed until December 2025, two years over the scheduled timeframe, and it is a disgrace that today we are still waiting to receive the promised and much needed additional weekday and weekend services on the Shepparton line,” Ms O’Keeffe said.
