Starting with five women, MMZ WIFN has grown to 29 members.
More importantly, network chair and Emery Captain Julia O’Connell said it has created connections between women who may not otherwise have had the opportunity to meet, share experiences or support one another.
“When we established MMZ WIFN, the goal was simple: to create more opportunities for women to connect, contribute and feel that they belonged within the RFS,” she said.
“What has grown from that first conversation has become something much bigger than a network.
“Through professional development, wellbeing activities, networking opportunities, guest speakers and our monthly newsletter, we have created spaces for women to learn from each other, build confidence and explore opportunities they may not previously have considered.
“Women have been encouraged to step forward, share their knowledge and have their voices heard.”
Members say one of the most rewarding outcomes has been seeing those connections extend beyond their own network.
MMZ WIFN has engaged with senior leadership, the commissioner’s office and the Minister for Volunteering, creating opportunities to share the experiences and perspectives of women working and volunteering across the RFS.
The network has also demonstrated that inclusion is not about creating another layer of the organisation.
“It is about making sure people have a pathway to participate, contribute and lead,” Capt O’Connell said.
“The response from members and interest from other zones has shown us that there is a genuine need for connection and support.
“This award belongs to every woman who has contributed, attended an event, shared an idea, written for the newsletter, encouraged another woman or simply turned up and been part of the conversation.
“We are proud of what MMZ WIFN has achieved, but even more proud of the people and connections behind it.”
