Visitors and train enthusiasts arrived at sunrise to explore the area, as the Riverlander Slow Rail Journey made a stop in our humble town.
After spending the night sleeping in the train’s restored carriages, passengers were treated to a tour of Deniliquin.
Fortuitously, one of Edward River Council’s Town Hall open days coincided with the visit.
Visitors were able to not only shop and eat in our CBD, they could also see the amazing renovations at one of our oldest buildings too.
In the afternoon the visitors returned to their train and departed, heading off to explore the Port of Echuca.
Last days of exhibition
Also available for the train visitors - and others - to view at the weekend was the ‘100 CAPES. 100 STORIES.’ installation at the Peppin Heritage Centre and tourist information office.
The exhibition was curated by The House That Dan Built, and sees a series of red capes suspended in the exhibition space.
Each was hand stitched by 100 women from across the country, and brought to life by music inspired by their stories.
“During the 2020 lockdowns, 100 women from rural, regional, and metropolitan Australia were mailed a cape-making kit,” The House That Dan Built explains.
“As they pieced together the garment they were interviewed about their life by one of 15 young women who brought their stories back to The House.
“These stories of girlhood dreams and meaningful, vital, and ordinary life feature in the original soundtrack that accompanies the 100 capes installation.”
The exhibition can be viewed at the Peppin Heritage Centre until July 28.
Jock’s visit cancelled
Junior basketballers who were hoping to learn some great skills and tips from an Olympian baller were unexpectedly left with a clear evening on Friday.
NBA player and Aussie Boomer Jock Landale - who has family connections to Deniliquin - was expected to take clinics on Friday night.
Due to illness, and on the advice of the Basketball Australia physicians, Jock had to cancel on Friday afternoon.
It’s not the first time Jock has offered his time to inspire the local basketballers, so hopefully another similar event will be on the cards in the not too distant future.
Bleak start to the day
Deniliquin and district was plagued by the two big ‘Fs’ of weather yesterday - frost and fog.
Between the ice covered lawns and the thick fog which descended over the town, it was a bit of a whitewash.
That was until the sun could truly shine.
The fog cleared and green and dewy grass emerged again.
We can possibly expect more of the same in coming days, with similar weather predictions forecast each day this week - lows of between -1ºC and 1ºC and tops of about 15ºC.
The warmest prediction this week is a top of 17ºC on Thursday, when late showers are also predicted.
The highest low predicted is 4ºC on Friday.
Station glitch
Still on the weather, it seems the Bureau of Meteorology’s weather station at Deniliquin Airport is on the blink.
No minimum or maximum temperature details have been recorded on the BoM site for this weather station for the whole month of July so far.
Investigating further, it looks like this data has been missing from the website since June 23.
Wind and rain details are still being recorded though, with 15.4mm of rain recorded at the airport so far this month.
We’ve reached out to the BoM for an explanation. It was unable to respond before going to print yesterday.
