The fire was reported at 4.17pm when a neighbour raised the alarm.
Deniliquin Fire + Rescue crews quickly contained the blaze to the kitchen, preventing it from spreading further.
Firefighters say the occupant had fallen asleep, and the home’s smoke alarm had been dismantled.
Acting Captain Les Booth said it serves as a reminder that your smoke alarms should be correctly installed and maintained, and should never be removed from their proper position.

Deniliquin FRNSW firefighters responded to two separate calls for assistance in Moama on Saturday.
The first wad received about 6.12am, but the Deni crew was stood down as soon as it was discovered it was an automatic fire alarm.
Less than four hours later, about 10am, they were on the road to Moama again to assist with a unit fire.
On arrival, Deni firefighters assisted Moama Fire + Rescue and the Rural Fire Service, and were able to contain the blaze.
