They are seeking to end their 15-year affiliation with the separate Farrer and South West Junior Football Netball Leagues for a chance to play in the Picola North West Division against some of their historic rivals.
Coly played against Jerilderie and Rennie in the Coreen & District Football League until it folded in 2007, and joined the Farrer League in 2010 after a stint with the Hume Football Netball League.
The move to request entry to the Picola League earned unanimous support from the 85 members in attendance for an October 8 special club meeting, prompted by strong support at a September information evening.
Coleambally Football Netball Club president Danny Graham said one of the primary goals of the move is the unification of junior and senior players to one league, rather than two separate competitions.
He said geographical factors and the timing of Picola League changes also prompted the transfer process.
“We’re currently in two separate leagues on the same day, so a large part of this would be uniting the club on the same day under the community football model,” he said.
“With the Picola League split, it was too good an opportunity to pass up.
“It would also be less travel on average, with a little less for juniors.
“While it would be one less junior grade for us, the aim would be to ultimately unite the club on the same day.”
A preliminary Piocla League meeting on the proposal was held Wednesday night, but there are still a number of steps and approvals that need to be achieved before Coly’s move is gazetted.
The league will now carefully consider the request and investigate any issues or inquiries arising.
Another league meeting will be called in the future to make a final determination.
An affirmative league vote would force the PDFNL reconsider how many teams will be in the North West and South East divisions, with the split placing eight teams in each from 2027 without the addition of other clubs.
