Mathoura goes at Hawks for two quarters

Mathoura hung with Barooga for the first half, but fell off after the break as it was defeated in the Picola District Football League.

Taking on the Hawks for the first time in a long time after the former Murray league club’s off-season league switch, the Timbercutters adjusted to the unfamiliar opposition well at home at Mathoura Recreation Reserve early on.

Mathoura would have felt it easily could have led at quarter-time after finding more scoring shots than Barooga.

However, the Cutters would only convert three of seven, while the visitors notched four from six, resulting in a 26-22 scoreline in Barooga’s favour.

The Hawks cooled off a little in the second, but the Cutters couldn’t muster as many opportunities, slipping to seven points down at the main break.

It was still anyone’s to play for coming into the second half, but Barooga continued to pull away during the third quarter.

The Hawks kicked four goals to two to put the lead beyond 20 and finished the game with a dominant fourth period, holding Mathoura to a point while kicking six more to seal the result.

Final score: 16.9 (105) to 7.6 (48).

Riley Gow was lethal up front for the Hawks, slotting eight majors, while Jordy Priestley was again Mathoura’s best, kicking four of his side’s seven.

The Timbercutters remain second bottom of the ladder with one win and head into one of their biggest matches of the season this Saturday, battling fellow one-win side Blighty.

The game is Mathoura’s last realistic chance to put four points on the board for the rest of the season, with the game to be held at Blighty Recreation Reserve.
