KPOS Mavericks left McEwen Reserve Red dead and buried in a flawless six-rubber win to maintain top spot on the competition’s ladder.
The intent was visible early as Jake Sprunt and Michael Telford bageled Charlie Thomson and Ben Ladson, before Ellie Mifka and Esma Corbic flew by Red’s Kylie Reither and Christine Wright 6-2.
Mifka and Sprunt then combined in the mixed doubles set for a second bageling, before winning the fourth and fifth rubbers 6-1, 6-2.
Mifka and Telford would seal the deal in emphatic fashion in the sixth set 6-0, producing a staggering scoreline of 6-36 to 0-5.
Meanwhile, Lemnos sits in second place after defeating McEwen Reserve Green’s 2-21 with 4-32.
Another undefeated start to the tennis campaign, Lemnos’ Paul and Viv Jeffrey boosted the confidence early with a 6-1 rubber win.
The Green would narrowly secure the second set 6-5, but the luck quickly ran out.
6-4, 6-2, 6-2 results followed in favour of Lemnos, sewing up victory before the sixth rubber, which would fall the way of McEwen Reserve’s Brock O’Hara and Greg Comer 6-3.
Shepparton North too remains undefeated but again was tested as back-to-back premier to keep its winning streak alive.
The North and Shepparton Lawn engaged in a back-and-forth affair that saw the sets level at two-apiece after four rubbers, while the games ledger was drawn at 25 after five rubbers, meaning it was another tense last-set-wins finish for Shepparton North.
But once again, as the pressure rose, the cream of the crop did too, the North’s Clark Pettigrew and Dean Pritchett displaying the winning pedigree in the clutch for a 6-2 final set result, and a 4-31 to 2-27 victory overall.
To close out the round, KPOS Commandos reversed its narrow round one defeat from a three-game loss to a three-game win against McEwen Reserve Gold.
The Commandos learned their lesson from their loss to Shepparton North, taking a 3-26 to 2-22 lead heading into the final rubber.
Requiring three game wins in the final set, Matt Pell and Fiona Wieland notched five games but fell short to the Gold’s Lloyd Akers and Ty Davidson, however it was enough to win the tie-breaking component, 3-31 to 3-28.
A riveting third round awaits the Friday Nights lights, with 1-1 record holders Shepparton Lawn and KPOS Commandos battling for an early jump into finals contention, while the hot-starting Mavericks face the reigning champions Shepparton North in a mouthwatering match-up.
Lemnos will look to serve a third straight win against current last-placed McEwen Reserve Red, while one of McEwen Reserve Green and Gold will get its first win of the season when the pair face off for an inter-club derby.
