Their game plan was executed perfectly in the opening term, with relentless pressure in both defence and attack helping the side pile on three unanswered goals.
Majors to Haydn Sampson, Ryan Squires and Liam Knuckey, who was given an opportunity up forward, saw the Rovers take early control.
The second quarter was a different story. Whether the Rovers eased off the intensity or Dookie lifted, the visitors worked their way back into the contest.
Dookie kicked three goals for the term while the Rovers could only manage two behinds, allowing the game to swing back to an even contest.
Knowing they had given their opponents a sniff, the Rovers lifted their tackling pressure and intensity in the third quarter.
They restricted Dookie to just a single behind, but some missed opportunities in front of goal meant the Rovers could only add three behinds themselves.
With scores locked at 26-all at the final change, coach Wally Bulmer challenged his players to find another gear and they responded.
The Rovers edged in front and embodied their team mantra - "If you don't win, just don't be beaten".
Dannon Leetham kicked two important goals and, despite some costly lapses in discipline resulting in free kicks and a 50m penalty, the boys maintained their composure.
Their ability to control possession and play keepings-off football helped preserve a narrow lead late in the game.
Heartbreakingly, Dookie earned a shot at goal after the final siren and converted to snatch a four-point victory.

Fifths
It was a muddy start to the morning, but the youngsters embraced the conditions and got off to a strong start.
Dookie defended well throughout the game, but the Rovers were able to gain the upper hand through the middle of the ground.
Lincoln Arthur and Kayden Atley shared the ruck duties effectively, while Tate Parlato played an excellent game in the ruck rover role.
On the wings, Dusty Patterson and Ilah Werta worked hard all day, covering plenty of ground and showcasing their developing skills.
As he does every week, Bertie Landale was relentless in defence, laying strong tackles and shutting down anyone who came near him.
The most pleasing aspect of the day was the improved ball movement.
