Statement from the Family of Dr Ernest Michael Hoolihan OAM

City of Townsville, Queensland — 2 September 2026

It is with profound sadness that the family of Dr Ernest Michael Hoolihan OAM announces his peaceful passing on 25th August 2026 at the age of 93. At the time of his passing at the Townsville University Hospital, he was surrounded by family.

Ernie was a beloved spouse, parent, sibling, grandparent, great-grandparent, friend and advisor to many, a well-known, respected Elder, Leader and Social Justice Warrior within the Townsville community. Our father dedicated his life to providing solutions to the racism and discrimination which plagues the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. He crossed many barriers within community sectors and found common ground to assist the Townsville Aboriginal Community.

He is a founding member of many of the primary Indigenous service provision community organisations such as the Townsville Aboriginal and Islander Health Services (TAIHS) and Townsville’s Aboriginal Legal Service (now ATSILS).

Amongst his greatest achievements was the establishment of Townsville’s Yumba Meta Housing. A community organisation dedicated to providing short to long-term housing, accommodation support programs to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Townsville region.

He touched the lives of many. Earning the respect of all who have met him and bringing immeasurable love and joy to his family.

At this time, the family kindly requests they be allowed the time and space to grieve this devastating loss.

Details regarding a memorial service honouring our Gugu Badhun / Ngadjon Elder will be shared at a later date.
