Featuring 22 attractions across the landscape of southern NSW, the scenic journey extends from Echuca-Moama to Womboota, Bunnaloo, Barham-Koondrook, Caldwell, Deniliquin and Mathoura.
The trail is filled with rich food, wine, locally sourced and handmade goods and experiences — all equally as rich as the history and stories the region holds.
Delve deeper into the Backroads journey by hearing from Traditional Owners, business owners, farmers and community members in the newly released, six-part podcast series.
Murray River Council tourism officer Kristy Hayes said the Backroads Trail podcast would resonate not only with visitors, but locals of the twin towns and surrounds, too.
“Many of our lifelong locals would not be aware of the stories of bare knuckle boxing fought whilst Ned Kelly looked on, the invention of mechanised shearing or how the Murray River changed its course — history that is in towns just a stone’s throw away,” she said.
Kristy said the podcast series discussed a wide range of content, providing insight into connection to place, Indigenous stories of the area, how the trail has evolved and what life is like on the trail, spoken by those who know best.
Audiences can hear from three passionate farmers, chatting about the resilience and adaptability of their work and the learnings that come from tough times on the land.
Stories are told from those who have left the big smoke for riverine dwellings, others who use the Backroads Trail for artistic inspiration — the podcast explores differing themes through each episode.
While indulging in the wonders of the Backroads Trail — meeting the locals, enjoying the fresh produce, absorbing all the countryside has on offer — Kristy recommended elevating the experience one step further.
“Listening to the podcast while you make your way around the Backroads Trail will not only enable people to immerse themselves in the history and experience, but to stand on historical sites and immerse themselves in tales of the land,” she said.
“Not to mention enjoying the fantastic local food and wine along the way.”
