Unleash creativity at Art Sports

The creative challenges are different each month.

The new competition kicked off with collage in August this year, and other mediums that might be explored are print making, photography, charcoal and paint - the options are endless.

No art skill is required. You can simply come along and sign up, or just watch the fun as it unfolds.

Spectators do more than watch, they help their favourite players and meddle with others and choose the winning team.

Hosted by Harry Pepper Coffee and Deniliquin artist Mel Anderson, the community art-based competitions are supported by the NSW Government and South West Arts through the Country Arts Support Program.

Mel is the ‘taskmaster’ while Adam sets the scene and Erika Heffer is the ‘cat herder’.

Reviews from the pilot event in August included comments such as “I loved how unhinged the activities were” and “the community engagement and collective energy of the attendees was the best part”.

The organisers said based on the success of that first event, the Art Sport sessions would continue on the first Friday of each month.

“With art challenges, fun for all ages, and even a few surprises thrown in, we would love to welcome you the first Friday of every month at Harry Pepper Coffee,” Mel said.

“I get the feeling there's a real want in the community to explore different ways of communicating,” Adam added.

“The pilot has shown that handing control over to us and allowing inhibitions to drop through art practice, shows us that our community trusts us with creating a safe, collaborative space to connect,” he continued.

Tickets are $50 for players, and spectators $20.

Player tickets include materials for three rounds of competition, a light supper and finger food, and held cover the costs of prizes.

Art Sports is an all-ages event, but children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
