As the Farrer by-election on May 9 approaches, we urge women across our region to look closely at where each candidate stands on issues that directly affect our lives, particularly women’s health and reproductive rights.
Some parties, including One Nation, have adopted a ‘pro-life’ position. A position that restricts women’s reproductive autonomy, which would potentially impact access to reproductive healthcare.
This has real consequences for women’s autonomy, health, and ability to make informed choices about their futures.
Reproductive healthcare is central to a woman’s independence, shaping decisions about education, work, family, and wellbeing. When access is limited, so too is opportunity.
As mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, and grandmothers, we share a responsibility to stay informed and to encourage others to do the same.
With 12 candidates in the race, voters have meaningful choice.
This is not about directing anyone’s vote, but about encouraging careful consideration.
Take the time to understand where candidates stand on:
• Access to reproductive healthcare
• Women’s economic security and workplace rights
• The quality and availability of regional health services
• Evidence-based health education
• These issues will influence your health, your rights, and your future.
Before casting your vote, seek out information. Read candidate policies, attend forums, and ask questions.
Regional communities deserve representation that respects women’s autonomy and supports accessible, comprehensive healthcare.
Rights are not guaranteed - they are protected through informed participation.
Women of Farrer, this is your opportunity to be heard. Be informed. Ask questions. Vote with clarity and purpose.
We owe it to ourselves, and to those who follow.
Yours etc,
Sally Osborne and Airlie and Edwina Circuitt
