Celebrating 80 early

The family gathered in Melbourne for a celebration that spanned three days, honouring eight decades of a life defined by agricultural innovation, vintage motoring, and community service.

The festivities opened on July 31 at Friends of Fire restaurant, where family and friends raised a toast to Ian's enduring legacy.

The celebration culminated on Saturday afternoon in a private suite at Marvel Stadium for the St Kilda versus Sydney Swans clash.

A true 'South Melbourne' supporter, Ian watched as his team secured a hard-fought victory, defeating St Kilda 16.11 (107) to 13.10 (88).

While the scoreline drew friendly rivalry among the family, the shared experience remained the highlight of the day.

Joining Ian and his wife Prue were their daughter Michelle, son Troy and his partner Louise Grummett, and grandchildren Sasha Lea-Rowell and Valentino Lea.

Also present were Sheila Lea, Stuart Lea and partner Kylee Unwin, Peter Lea and partner Christine McMahon, Noela and Mick Barlow, Marcus McDonald, Fionn Majella and Pam Van Gruene.

Ian's journey to this milestone began in Deniliquin, where he was born and raised.

His connection to the land deepened in 1973 when he and Prue moved to Wynlea farm.

Over the next five decades, Ian built a formidable reputation in agriculture, complemented by a 27-year career in the seed industry with Superior Seeds.

His dedication to the sector spans nearly 80 years of professional contribution.

Beyond the paddock, Ian's passion for machinery has been a constant thread.

In his youth, he competed in sporting car club rallies, a hobby that evolved into the meticulous restoration of a 1925 Dodge.

He remains an active member of the community today, serving as a local historian and writer for the Deniliquin & District Historical Society, ensuring the stories of the region are preserved for future generations.
