But after turning a week of work experience into a weekly ritual at his dream workplace, Banmira Specialist School student Riley Crisp can’t wait for Tuesday to roll around.
The Year 11 student found his calling surrounded by tools, parts and packaging at Shepp City Garden Equipment, assisting owner Mat Sheldon with small engine maintenance and repairs.
His excitement showed, not missing a beat over the term two school holidays, helping out voluntarily on Tuesdays.
That excitement grew as he recently helped out with the final assembly of a brand new, bright red ride-on mower.
“I just want to work here for ever, this is my dream workplace,” he said.
His eagerness and success during his work experience has led to a structured workplace learning arrangement for the remainder of 2026, while he pursues a Certificate II in Automotive Studies.
The career start has been a case of matching Riley’s skills and interests with an employer willing to give him a go.
Goulburn Murray Local Learning Employment Network (GMLLEN) helped Riley gain this opportunity when they approached business owner Mat Sheldon and proposed a week of work experience.
“I’ve always taken on work experience students, because you never know when you’re going to find your next star,” Mr Sheldon said.
“I can tell the difference when someone does their job, and when someone enjoys doing their job.
“As for Riley, he just loves his job.”
Next year, Riley is hoping to take on a school-based apprenticeship, allowing him to complete his schooling and get a jump start on a formal apprenticeship once he graduates.
Leading teacher Kayla Whittaker said the experience had been transformative for Riley, who has attended Banmira Specialist School since Year 7.
“He always comes to school absolutely beaming and wanting to talk about his Tuesdays at Shepp City Garden Equipment,” Ms Whittaker said.
