The designs are courtesy of Uncle Raymond Walker from Moonahcullah Mission who elected to use a ‘‘hunters and gatherers’’ theme.
Walker’s theme reflects men as the hunters and women as the gatherers.
Saturday’s fixture against Picola was identified as the perfect opportunity for the designs to be showcased as United hosted their own Indigenous day earlier in the season.
The two clubs have developed a strong rivalry in recent years with talented Indigenous footballers and netballers pulling on the colours of the respective teams.
Mathoura playing-coach Darcy Robinson said the day will be a great way to celebrate the club’s Indigenous stars.
‘‘The day means a fair bit to not only our Indigenous players but all of us at the club,’’ he said.
‘‘We have footballers like Stewie Day, Wade Austin and Earl Handy, and a few netballers who are all so proud of their heritage.
‘‘Stewie and Wade both bring a fair bit of leadership and polish to the side.
‘‘Wade particularly just has that freakish skill that I wish I could have in my game.
‘‘Earl Handy is a player that can be relied on. You give him a role and he executes it each week.
‘‘The attitude towards the Indigenous Round has been that if the AFL can do it then why can’t we do it at community footy level.’’
The game will be of high importance for Mathoura, with the Timbercutters still a mathematical chance to play finals.
A win could see Mathoura jump to ninth spot, while a loss would leave them sitting 11th.
Despite not winning a game since round 10, the Timbercutters have been impressive over the last month, pushing top eight sides Katamatite and Deni Rovers, as well as ladder leader Strathmerton, to the limit.
However the last quarter has been an issue for Mathoura, with late fade outs seeing them lose their lead against each side.
‘‘It comes back a little bit to the no-win feeling,’’ Robinson said.
‘‘For the last four years since I joined the club we haven’t had that winning feeling.
‘‘It’s like we work hard to get in the position to win but we just expect to drop off and we don’t capitalise on it.
‘‘I’m trying to coach it into our players to get that winning feeling because our best is good enough.
‘‘We’ll have Che Taranto and Luke Pridham both back in the side this week so they will be very handy inclusions.
‘‘It’s an exciting time for this group and if we can get the win we should be in a good spot to aim for finals.’’
Mathoura’s Sponsors Day will also take place on Saturday, as the club aims to showcase the importance of cultural awareness and inclusion.
After the match, the Indigenous jumpers will be auctioned, alongside 50 square metres of Sir Walter turf donated by Coolabah Turf and a corporate box at the AFL clash between Hawthorn and the Gold Coast Suns on August 18 at Marvel Stadium.
The club believes the day is a great opportunity to show the community the great atmosphere at the Mathoura Football and Netball Club.
The game will kick off at 2pm after a welcome to country and smoking ceremony.
