The prestigious annual two-day lawn bowls tournament this year featured 92 teams consisting of over 1,700 players at 16 venues across Victoria and border NSW.
Originally established to support WWII servicemen, the Shield has fostered camaraderie in a friendly sporting environment for over 70 years.
This spirit was evident for the entirety last weekend.
The Saturday on the RSL greens was overcast and chilly, and on Sunday the sun shone at times, but there was warmth, enthusiasm, great sportsmanship, and mateship among veterans and members on and off the greens.
Five games of 12 ends were played over the two days, between Box Hill, Colac, Kyabram, Sale, Shepparton and the Deni RSL/Deni Bowling Club composite team.
Teams at all venues were vying for the section title, and this section's winner was Kyabram.
A great effort by the four RSL/Deni Bowls Club composite teams placed them third in a high-quality field.
RSL Bowling Club president Niels Hilton congratulated Kyabram on their five games win.
He thanked all the visiting clubs for arriving early for practice and mateship on Friday, participating in this prestigious event, and supporting Deni RSL Bowling Club over the three days.
Many thanks were extended to Mark Law for rolling the greens each morning, umpiring, and his co-ordination as team and venue manager in Deniliquin.
Meanwhile, another four Deni teams travelled to Benalla to compete under extremely chilly conditions.
With an equally competitive field, the Deni RSL/Deni Bowls Club composite team took to the greens against Longbeach, Numurkah, Bairnsdale, Benalla and Swan Hill to finish second to Swan Hill after their five games.
A brilliant effort by all members, displaying great team work, friendship and camaraderie.
Team manager for the away team, and RSL Bowls Club vice-president, Rod Reid thanked everyone involved at Benalla for hosting the event, all members that travelled away to play, and made a special mention to Lindsay Dalzell who transported the team safely to and from Benalla.
Deni RSL Bowls Club along with RSL sub-branch members wish to extend their sincere thanks to Dysons for their very generous donation of the bus to transport members to and from Benalla.
Their support of Deni composite team's participation in this prestigious tournament is very much appreciated, and both clubs look forward to their continued valued support in the future.
