Despite strong local support, the premiership trophies ultimately headed to Goolgowi and Rankins Springs.
The Rankins Springs Dragons secured their first women’s premiership with a courageous 4-0 victory over the previously undefeated Ivanhoe Hens.
Ivanhoe entered the decider as heavy favourites after an unbeaten seven‑game season, having beaten Rankins Springs twice and conceding only three tries all year.
The match was halted early when Dragons halfback Caprice Crowe suffered a dislocated hip, prompting a 30‑minute delay.
Rankins Springs’ defence proved decisive, continuing a remarkable run that also saw them keep Deniliquin, Hillston and Goolgowi scoreless during the season, with Tash Tuckett was awarded Player of the Match.
In the men’s game, the Goolgowi Rabbitohs claimed their second Proten Cup premiership with a 20-6 win over the Ivanhoe Roosters.
This adds to their 2019 title, also won at Ivanhoe.
Ivanhoe struck first through, but Goolgowi hit back before half time, converting for a 6-4 lead.
Ivanhoe levelled through a penalty goal, but Goolgowi finished stronger through a decisive try, before further four‑pointers to Sellers and Taylor sealed the result.
Tommy Sellers was named Player of the Match after a standout performance in the centres.
The Proten Cup Presentation Night will be held on August 28 at the Griffith Leagues Club.
