Widespread rain

The Murray-Darling Basin received widespread rain across the week ending June 17, and further rain is expected this week.

The highest totals in the past week were observed in the Upper Murray and Victorian tributary catchments as well as the northern basin in Queensland.

The Murray-Darling Basin Authority reported notable rainfall totals for the past week including:

Mount Hotham (59mm) and Mount Buffalo (48mm) in Victoria.
Tailem Bend (35mm) and Milang (22mm) in South Australia.
Lightning Ridge (32mm) and Khancoban (30mm) in New South Wales.

The Bureau of Meteorology’s eight-day rainfall outlook is forecasting widespread rainfall across the basin of 5mm to 25mm. Heavier rainfall (25 to 50mm) is expected in the Upper Murray catchments and upper Victorian catchments this week

Unregulated inflows to Hume Dam (excluding releases from the Snowy Scheme and Dartmouth Dam) for the 12 months from June 2025 to May 2026 were about 1030 gigalitres (GL).

This volume is about 82 per cent Annual Exceedance Probability (AEP), which means that about 18 per cent of years (from 1975 onwards) have been drier over the same period.

The historical period of data used here is the period from 1975 onwards to provide a more contemporary comparison for inflows to date when compared to using all available data.
