Edward River Council will receive $960,000 while the Murray River Council will be allocated $1.86 million.
Councils will receive the funding on July 1, 2020 and it must spend by June 30, 2021.
Mayors Chris Bilkey and Norm Brennan recently called for government help to ‘‘continue to operate effectively and provide essential services’’.
While Cr Bilkey doesn’t believe the funding has come from his plea for help, he is pleased with what it means for his district.
‘‘The funding will help us improve roads, bridges and streetscapes,’’ Cr Bilkey said.
‘‘Our community has struggled; our businesses have struggled, and the funding will keep employment for not only our council employees but also for many construction workers in our area.
‘‘We have a portfolio of shuttle projects that we keep ready for when money comes along like this. We will get them underway quickly.’’
Cr Brennan said the additional funding is ‘‘very welcomed by the council’’.
‘‘The allocated money is flexible for what it can be spent on.
‘‘We will get together some projects and get them started.’’
The funding is shared between 537 local councils across Australia.
It comes as a response from the federal government to stimulate communities hit by the Coronavirus pandemic.
