The evening highlighted the powerful legacy of the Fairley Leadership Program, which for nearly three decades has built a strong network of leaders driving positive change across the Goulburn Murray.
Guided by MC Neha Samar (Fairley Fellow from 2021), the event program brought together voices from across generations of the Fairley Leadership Program, each contributing to a powerful narrative of leadership in action.
Keynote speaker Cathy McGowan set the tone for the evening, sharing reflections on the importance of regional leadership and the role individuals play in shaping their communities.
This was followed by a candid and insightful panel discussion led by board member Shara Scott (FF 2022).
Panellists included long-term patron Ross McPherson, past executive director Lisa McKenzie (FF 1997), past board member and chair Sam Birrell (FF 2013) and current chair Lacey Nicholson (FF 2022), who brought honesty and depth to the realities and impact of leadership across the region.
Throughout the night, presenters shared personal stories of growth, challenge and connection, reminding the audience that leadership is not defined by titles, but by action and influence.
Executive officer Jesse Mitchell (FF 2023) said the event was not just a celebration, but a reflection of a thriving movement.
“When you look around the room, you’re not just seeing individuals ‒ you’re seeing a network, a movement of people who care deeply about this region and are actively shaping its future.”
Since its inception, GMCL has focused on cultivating “a willing, ready and able pool of community leaders” to respond to the complex challenges and opportunities facing regional communities.
More than 700 alumni have now graduated from the program, contributing across local government, business, community organisations, health, education and beyond.
